Year of the Tiger虎

The Tiger governs the hours before dawn and the first month of spring — the point where the year turns and the cold breaks. That placement is the whole reading: the Tiger is the sign of the beginning of movement, when something has to push through resistance.

In Chinese folk belief the tiger is a guardian rather than a predator. Images of tigers were painted on children's shoes and hats to frighten away what might harm them, and the sign inherits that protectiveness — Tigers are described as people who put themselves between others and trouble.

The cost is in the tempo. The classical texts describe the Tiger as unable to sustain the intensity it starts with, and warn against the sign's dislike of being directed. A Tiger who is managed too closely leaves.

Traditional occupational readings put the Tiger in command — military, leadership, anything where someone has to decide without complete information. The sign is considered poorly suited to work that requires waiting for permission.

Tiger years have a reputation in Chinese practice for volatility: large changes, both directions. The advice attached is not to avoid them but to expect that whatever happens will happen quickly.

The Tiger's triangle is with the Horse and the Dog, and the shared quality is directness. These are the signs that commit before all the information arrives, and that trust conviction over analysis. It is the most active of the four sets and the least patient.

The tiger, not the lion, is the king of beasts in Chinese tradition. It guards tombs, appears on military insignia, and is painted on children's shoes and hats to frighten away what would harm them. The character for king, 王, is said to be visible in the markings on a tiger's brow. That protective role is why the sign reads as guardian rather than predator.
