The Dragon is the only creature in the cycle that does not exist, and the only one associated with the emperor. Chinese birth rates measurably rise in Dragon years — the 2024 Wood Dragon and the 2012 Water Dragon both produced visible bumps in several East Asian countries. That is not superstition operating at the margins; it is a sign strong enough to change demographics.
In Chinese cosmology the dragon brings rain, which in an agricultural society means it brings everything. It is a benevolent figure, not the hoarding monster of European tradition, and the sign carries that generosity: Dragons are described as people who give freely and expect the same scale in return.
The recorded weakness is proportionate. A sign associated with the emperor does not take correction well, and the classical texts warn that the Dragon's standards fall hardest on itself — the sign is prone to treating an ordinary result as a failure.
Occupational readings put the Dragon in front — leadership, performance, anything with visibility. The sign is considered badly suited to work where its contribution is invisible, not from vanity but because the tradition regards a hidden Dragon as a wasted one.
Dragon years are the most sought-after in the cycle and the effect is measurable: birth rates rise in several East Asian countries. That produces a real second-order effect the astrology does not mention — Dragon cohorts are larger, so they compete against more people for school places and jobs.
The Dragon's triangle is with the Rat and the Monkey — the improvisers. The Dragon supplies the conviction and the other two the ingenuity, which is why Chinese tradition treats this as the most effective of the four sets and the most prone to overreach.
The Chinese dragon has almost nothing in common with the European one. It is a water creature, associated with rivers and rainfall, and its favour was what an agricultural empire depended on. Emperors used it as their emblem, and until the end of the Qing the five-clawed dragon could be worn by no one else. That is the weight the sign carries: not menace, but authority and the responsibility that comes with it.

Your own year is not lucky
This surprises people who expect the opposite. In Chinese belief your běnmìngnián — the return of your own animal, every twelfth year — is considered a year of friction rather than fortune. The traditional explanation is that you come to the attention of Tai Sui, the deity of the year, and being noticed is not an advantage.
The customary protection is to wear red: a belt, socks, underwear, a cord at the wrist — usually given by someone else rather than bought for yourself, which is part of the custom. Red goods sell measurably better in the relevant years, so the belief is held widely enough to show up in retail figures.
For the Dragon, the last own year began in 2024 (Wood Dragon) and the next is 2036, from 2036-01-28 — a Fire Dragon. Anyone born under this sign in one of those years is in their own year for the whole of it, not on their birthday.
The five Dragons
