The Rooster announces the day, and the sign is read through that function: it is the one that makes things known. Mid-autumn and metal give it precision — metal in Chinese thought is the element of cutting, refining and separating what is true from what is not.
Roosters are described as exacting and industrious, the sign most likely to notice the error in the figures. The tradition treats this as genuinely valuable and genuinely uncomfortable to be near.
The difficulty is delivery rather than accuracy. The texts warn that the Rooster is right and says so immediately, and that being right is not the same as being heard.
The Rooster is placed in accounting, surgery, editing, inspection — work where the value is in catching what is wrong. Traditional readings treat the sign as indispensable and difficult in equal measure.
A Rooster year is read as a year of accounting in the broad sense: what was started earlier gets examined, and what does not hold up becomes visible.
The Rooster's triangle is with the Ox and the Snake, the methodical signs. The Rooster's contribution is exactness: the one that notices the discrepancy. Chinese tradition treats this set as the one you want auditing something and the one least comfortable to sit with socially.
The rooster's crow marks the boundary between night and day, and in Chinese folk belief that gives it power against what belongs to the dark. Your own year is not lucky
This surprises people who expect the opposite. In Chinese belief your běnmìngnián — the return of your own animal, every twelfth year — is considered a year of friction rather than fortune. The traditional explanation is that you come to the attention of Tai Sui, the deity of the year, and being noticed is not an advantage.
The customary protection is to wear red: a belt, socks, underwear, a cord at the wrist — usually given by someone else rather than bought for yourself, which is part of the custom. Red goods sell measurably better in the relevant years, so the belief is held widely enough to show up in retail figures.
For the Rooster, the last own year began in 2017 (Fire Rooster) and the next is 2029, from 2029-02-13 — a Earth Rooster. Anyone born under this sign in one of those years is in their own year for the whole of it, not on their birthday.
