The Snake is not a sinister sign in Chinese tradition — that reading is European. Here it is the 'little dragon', associated with wisdom, and with the still hours before noon when the heat begins to build but nothing has moved yet.
The readings centre on perception. Snakes are described as people who understand a situation early and then wait, which reads as composure from the outside and as calculation from the inside. Where the Rat sees the opening, the Snake sees the motive behind it.
The difficulty is disclosure. The classical texts describe the Snake as unwilling to show a position until it is sure, and warn that the habit costs it — people do not know where they stand with a Snake, and act accordingly.
The Snake is placed in research, analysis, philosophy and anything requiring sustained concentration in private. Traditional readings consider the sign wasted in work that demands constant visible activity.
A Snake year is read as a year for thinking rather than moving — the point in the cycle where the previous year's expansion is examined before the Horse's year of motion arrives.
The Snake's triangle is with the Ox and the Rooster, the methodical signs. What the Snake adds to that set is judgement about people, where the Ox supplies endurance and the Rooster precision. All three prefer to be certain before they move.
In Chinese the snake is the 'little dragon', and the two are closely linked — the dragon is often depicted as a serpent with limbs added. Nüwa, the creator goddess of Chinese myth, is depicted with a serpent's body. The sign therefore carries none of the biblical association with deceit that Western readers bring to it; what it carries is wisdom held in reserve.
Snake years
The same animal returns every twelve years, but with a different element each time — the full pairing repeats only every sixty. The date is when that Chinese year began.

Your own year is not lucky
This surprises people who expect the opposite. In Chinese belief your běnmìngnián — the return of your own animal, every twelfth year — is considered a year of friction rather than fortune. The traditional explanation is that you come to the attention of Tai Sui, the deity of the year, and being noticed is not an advantage.
The customary protection is to wear red: a belt, socks, underwear, a cord at the wrist — usually given by someone else rather than bought for yourself, which is part of the custom. Red goods sell measurably better in the relevant years, so the belief is held widely enough to show up in retail figures.
For the Snake, the last own year began in 2025 (Wood Snake) and the next is 2037, from 2037-02-15 — a Fire Snake. Anyone born under this sign in one of those years is in their own year for the whole of it, not on their birthday.

Traditional compatibility follows the geometry of the cycle rather than personality: signs four apart form a harmonious triangle, and the sign directly opposite — six apart — is the clash.
