Every symbol gets its own entry — where the belief comes from, what the variants of the dream mean, and what it tends to track in waking life.

BabySomething new and dependent on you. Read favourably almost everywhere, but the dreams themselves are usually anxious — because what is new is also fragile.
BeesThe one insect read favourably almost everywhere. Order, work and a system that functions — the sting is present but rarely the point.
Being chasedThe most common anxiety dream after teeth. What matters is not the pursuer but that you are running — the dream is about avoidance, not danger.
Being lateMissing something that will not wait. Distinct from the exam dream — you are prepared, and the problem is that time is running out anyway.
Being lostKnowing where you want to be and not how to get there. Distinct from the chase dream — nothing is pursuing you, and that absence is the whole point.
Being naked in publicExposure, and the fear of being seen as you are. Among the oldest recorded anxiety dreams — and the detail that matters is whether anyone noticed.
BirdNews, and the soul. The oldest messenger image there is — and which bird it was changes the reading more than in almost any other dream.
BloodLife, kinship and what is being spent. Alarming to dream of and read far more often as family and vitality than as injury.
BridgeA crossing between two defined states, with the thing you are crossing still underneath. Read by where you are on it, not by whether you reach the far side.
CarControl over your own direction. The dream reads whether you were driving, and whether the car did what you told it — almost nothing else matters.

Dead personDreaming of someone who has died is usually grief working rather than a message. The traditions treat it as visiting; both readings agree it is worth attention.
DeathAlmost never about dying. Across the traditions that record dreams, death is the image for something ending — and is read as favourable more often than not.
DogLoyalty, and what guards you. The friendliest common dream animal — and when it turns, the tradition reads it as loyalty betrayed rather than ordinary danger.
A doorA choice with a threshold. The oldest image for transition — and whether it opens, and which side you are on, carries the whole reading.
An earthquakeThe ground itself failing. The only common dream image in which the thing that moves is the one thing that is supposed to be fixed.
ElevatorMovement between levels that you do not control. Distinct from stairs — the effort is removed, and with it the sense of having earned the change.
Ex-partnerOne of the most common dreams there is, and almost never about wanting them back. What returns is usually the version of yourself you were with them.
An examBeing assessed, and not being ready. Reported for decades after the last real exam — which is what tells you it is not about school.
FallingOne of the most common dreams there is, and almost always about control rather than danger — your footing has changed and you have not adjusted yet.
FightingConflict the dreamer is inside rather than fleeing. Read by whether the blows land — ineffectual fighting is the commonest and most specific form.
FireTwo opposite meanings depending on whether it is contained. Fire in a hearth is warmth and purpose; fire loose is anger, loss or something out of hand.
FishSomething below the surface, and whether you can catch it. One of the older fortune images — and in most traditions, fish mean gain.

HairStrength, vanity and what is on show. One of the oldest dream images there is, and the one most tied to how a person believes they are seen.
HorsePower that is not yours but can be worked with. The oldest image for strength under agreement — and whether it is under control decides everything.
HospitalHanding yourself over to a process you cannot direct. The setting matters more than the illness — most reports involve no symptoms at all.
HouseThe most reliably self-referential dream image there is. Across traditions the house is the dreamer — and which room you are in is most of the meaning.
InsectsMany small irritations rather than one large threat. The count, not the creature, carries the meaning — and it is read as accumulation.
A keyAccess, and who controls it. Small object with disproportionate weight — losing one is among the more frequently reported anxiety images.
KissingAgreement more often than desire. Read by who initiates and by whether the dreamer wanted it — reports about attraction are the minority.
A knifeThe one common dream object that is both tool and weapon. Read by whose hand it is in and by what it was being used for.
A lionAuthority that does not need to act. Read by distance and by whether it is awake — almost never by whether it attacks.
MirrorThe gap between how you see yourself and how you are seen. The oldest reading is a warning — mirrors show truth, and truth is not always welcome.
MoneyRarely about money. It stands for what you value and what you owe — and finding it is read far less favourably than you would expect.
MountainDifficulty that is visible from the start. Unlike most obstacles in dreams, a mountain is honest — its size is known before the effort begins.
PoliceRules with the power to enforce them. Read by whether the dreamer feels guilty, which in most reports has nothing to do with having done anything.
PregnancySomething is developing that is not ready to be shown. Dreamt as often by people who cannot be pregnant, which tells you what the image is really doing.
RainRelief or grief, depending on what it does. The only common weather image read favourably as often as not — and the reading turns on whether it is needed.
RatsSomething wrong inside the structure rather than outside it. Rats are read as betrayal or decay because of where they live, not because of what they do.
A ringA promise made visible. The only common dream object whose whole meaning is that other people can see it — which is why losing one is read as exposure.
The seaWhat is larger than you and does not answer to you. Distinct from ordinary water dreams — the sea is read as circumstances beyond anyone's control.
ShoesPosition and standing rather than direction. What you walk in reads as the role you occupy, which is why losing them is reported as exposure.
SnakeSnakes in dreams point to something hidden that is about to be revealed — a person, a truth, or a change you have sensed but not yet named.
SnowSomething covered rather than gone. Read as stillness, concealment and waiting — and in most traditions as a pause rather than a loss.
SpiderA patient trap, or patient work. Every tradition reads the web rather than the animal — and whether you were caught in it or watching it being built.
StairsEffort with a direction. The dream reads whether you were going up or down, and whether the stairs behaved — almost every reading follows from those two.
A stormTrouble that is coming, arriving or passing — and the reading depends entirely on which. A storm is the one image with a built-in timeline.
Teeth falling outThe most commonly reported anxiety dream in the world. It usually marks a fear of losing control over how you are seen — rarely anything to do with your teeth.
ToiletPrivacy, and what needs to be got rid of. Embarrassing to report and very common — usually about needing space rather than about the body.
A trainA route you did not choose, on a schedule you do not set. Distinct from the car — you cannot steer, and that limitation is the meaning.
WaterWater is the standard dream image for emotion, and its state tells you most of what the dream means — clear or muddy, still or moving, contained or rising.
WeddingA binding commitment, and rarely about marriage. The traditions read it as a contract entered — and in Balkan folk reading, unfavourably.
A wolfThreat that arrives with others and knows the ground. Read less as an animal than as a group — which is why a single wolf reads so differently from a pack.
WormsSlow work underneath — decay in one direction, renewal in the other. The only common dream creature read both ways with equal frequency.
