The Goat — sometimes translated Sheep or Ram, since the Chinese character covers all three — governs the early afternoon and late summer, the season of ripening rather than growth. The readings are correspondingly gentle.
In tradition this is the most artistic of the twelve, and the one most associated with kindness that is not strategic. Goats are described as people who give without keeping account, which the texts treat as a genuine virtue and a practical vulnerability at once.
The recorded difficulty is decision. The Goat is said to hesitate, to seek reassurance, and to follow rather than lead — but the same sources note that a Goat pushed to its limit does not break, and that this is regularly underestimated.
The Goat is placed in the arts, in care work and in craft — occupations where patience and sensitivity produce the result. The sign is considered poorly suited to work requiring constant decisions under pressure.
A Goat year is read as gentle and slow, and Chinese practice treats it as the right time for family matters and for work that has been waiting for calm.
The Goat's triangle is with the Rabbit and the Pig — the signs that value harmony over advantage. The Goat contributes the artistic and the emotional register to that set, and Chinese tradition regards it as the most sensitive of the twelve.
The character 羊 covers sheep, goats and rams, which is why translations differ. It also appears inside the characters for 'beautiful' (美) and 'righteousness' (義), a linguistic accident that traditional commentary made much of. The sign's association with aesthetics and with moral gentleness is partly built on that.

Your own year is not lucky
This surprises people who expect the opposite. In Chinese belief your běnmìngnián — the return of your own animal, every twelfth year — is considered a year of friction rather than fortune. The traditional explanation is that you come to the attention of Tai Sui, the deity of the year, and being noticed is not an advantage.
The customary protection is to wear red: a belt, socks, underwear, a cord at the wrist — usually given by someone else rather than bought for yourself, which is part of the custom. Red goods sell measurably better in the relevant years, so the belief is held widely enough to show up in retail figures.
For the Goat, the last own year began in 2015 (Wood Goat) and the next is 2027, from 2027-02-06 — a Fire Goat. Anyone born under this sign in one of those years is in their own year for the whole of it, not on their birthday.
