An earthquake

Every anxious image in this dictionary assumes a floor. Chase dreams have somewhere to run; floods have somewhere to climb; storms have somewhere to shelter. An earthquake removes the assumption they all depend on, and that is the entire reading.

The ground

The correspondence is not danger but the failure of a basis — something the dreamer had treated as fixed and never examined, because there was no reason to.

Reports name discoveries rather than events: learning that a marriage was not what it appeared, that an employer is insolvent, that a parent is not who they were understood to be, that a health assumption was wrong. The common feature is that nothing visible had been wrong beforehand.

This is why the image is reported with disorientation rather than fear. Dreamers describe not knowing where to go, which is precise — the usual responses all require stable ground.

Buildings coming down

The most reported detail, and it follows from the first. Structures built on the assumption fail with it.

The structures in these reports are institutions and families more often than houses: companies, marriages, churches, professional bodies. Where the dreamer’s own home falls, the house entry’s readings apply directly and the dream is usually about the self rather than about an institution.

Notably, dreamers rarely report being hurt. What they describe is watching.

Aftershocks

Frequently reported and often the whole dream. The main event is over; the ground is not finished.

Read as consequences continuing after the event that caused them. Reports name the months after a separation, the period following a company’s collapse when the effects keep arriving, and the second and third disclosures that follow a first one.

The specific fear dreamers describe is not of the shaking but of not knowing whether it has stopped, which is an accurate account of that period.

A tremor nobody else notices

A quieter and more precise form: the dreamer feels movement and the people around them carry on.

The correspondence is a change the dreamer has registered and cannot get others to take seriously — a business problem seen early, a relative’s decline noticed before anyone agrees, a workplace shift that colleagues dismiss. Reports come from people who were later proved right, and often from people who are still waiting to be.

Cracks appearing

Distinct from collapse, and read as evidence rather than event. Walls, roads, the ground opening slightly.

Reports arrive before the disclosure rather than after: inconsistencies noticed, accounts that do not reconcile, a partner’s account of their movements not quite fitting. Dreamers in this form usually have not yet said anything to anyone.

Trying to reach someone

A common element worth separating because it changes the reading. The dreamer’s concern is not their own safety but locating a specific person.

Reports name situations where the dreamer’s real fear is for a dependant, a parent or a child during an upheaval that affects the family. The naming of the person is the useful part, and dreamers do it immediately.

Afterwards, standing on it

A smaller form and read favourably: the shaking has stopped and the dreamer tests the ground.

Reports arrive well after the upheaval, once a person has begun to trust a new arrangement — a second marriage, a new employer after a collapse, a body recovered from illness. The caution described is real and is not a warning; it is what rebuilt trust actually feels like.
