Spider

The spider is one of the few dream images where the animal itself is almost beside the point. What the traditions read is the web — a structure that is built patiently, holds more than it looks able to, and catches things that did not see it.

Patience, in both senses

The favourable reading is craft. A spider working is the image of something constructed slowly, correctly, and by an unbroken effort. Across European folk tradition the house spider is lucky and killing it is discouraged; in several regions a spider spinning in the morning was specifically read as money coming.

The unfavourable reading uses the same quality and turns it around: a trap is also built patiently, and also catches what did not notice it forming. Which of the two applies is usually settled by one question — were you making the web, or in it.

Being caught

The entanglement reading is the more commonly reported and the more informative. People describe it in situations where obligations have accumulated without a single moment of commitment: a job with duties that grew, a family arrangement nobody agreed to but everyone follows, a debt structure, a relationship with conditions that were never stated out loud.

The characteristic detail is that the dreamer cannot say when they became stuck. That matches the image exactly — webs are not noticed until they are touched.

The mother reading

Modern psychoanalytic interpretation attaches the spider to the devouring or controlling mother, and the association is strong enough in the literature to be worth mentioning. It is not a folk reading and it does not appear in the older sources.

Treat it as one possibility among several rather than the meaning. It applies where it applies — dreamers usually recognise it immediately or not at all — and imposing it where it does not fit produces nonsense.

Size and fear

Fear of spiders is common enough while awake that it contaminates the dream reading. A person who is frightened of spiders will dream of them under general stress without the image carrying any specific meaning, in the same way anyone dreams of what unsettles them.

The distinguishing question is whether the dream contained a web. Spider dreams with a web tend to have the structural meaning described here. Spider dreams that are only an animal, appearing suddenly, are usually ordinary fear finding a familiar shape.

Killing it

Worth its own note because folk practice and modern reading pull in opposite directions.

Across much of Europe the house spider is lucky and killing one brings misfortune — a belief recorded in England, Germany and much of the Balkans, and usually attached specifically to the spider found indoors rather than to spiders generally. Dreams of killing one therefore read unfavourably in those traditions: something useful destroyed out of squeamishness.

Modern reports treat it more simply, as ending an arrangement. What decides which reading applies is whether the dreamer felt relief or regret, and they can nearly always say.

Webs in odd places

A detail dreamers volunteer often enough to be worth naming: webs across doorways, over a bed, inside a mouth. The location carries the reading in the same way it does with the house image — a web across a door is something obstructing a decision, over a bed is something interfering with rest or intimacy, and in the mouth is something preventing speech.

That last one is reported by people who have been unable to say something for a long time, and it belongs beside the teeth dream more than beside the rest of this image.

Was there a web, and were you in it or building it. Almost the whole reading follows from those two answers.
